05 vibration at speed
First off, Thanks to all for the great info in the past threads.
My 05 has developed a vibration (feels like an out of balance tire) at speeds of 40mph - 80mph with the worst of it between 55 and 65. Took to a tire shop to have the tires rebalanced with no improvement, took it back again, the rebalanced with no improvement and suggested that it may be a defect in the OEM tires but would still be safe to drive on. I finally got sick of the vibrations and got new tires. Didn't fix the problem, took it back to the tire shop, they tried 3 more times and couldn't fix it, they now say their new tires may also have a problem and will waranty them with a different brand to see if it fixes the problem. I asked if it could be anything other than the tires and they didn't think so. I suspect it's not the tires. Went skiing over the weekend and had it in 4wd and the problem went away with the exeption of when I take my foot of the throttle, as soon as I get back on the gas it stops. Put it back in 2wd, the problem came back, switched to 4wd and the vibrations stopped. Input from my buddies are: keep it in 4wd (idiot), may be a bad U-joint or may be an out of balance drive shaft. I plan on talking to the tire shop and then the dealer to see if they have any input but in the mean time, does anyone out there want to take a stab at it?? |

You may have a damage wheel. The tire shop should have perform a wheel inspection. There are balance machines that can check for deformation of the wheels, unfortunately not all the tire shop have this kind the machine. The factory recommend to use the Hunter GSP9700: GSP9700 Road Force Measurement System

Thanks for the input, I checked again with the shop and i'm going to have the u-joints and drive shafts checked tomorrow. They said that they did road force balance the tires/rims and are pretty sure the rims aren't the problem but they'll double check again. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Problem Solved. Turned out to be a bad u-joint in front. Two of the bearings were completely fried to the point that the needle bearings were being pulverized into a rusty powder. I would have thought that my tire shop should have looked at something as simple as that before they balanced the tires 8 times! My mechanic said it was pretty obvious. I am surprised that a u-joint would fail after only 45,000 miles.

U joint failure
I had the same thing happen to my 2005 Xterra this past week. I had a bad vibration that I was pretty sure started after I put brand new tires on it. It was a clicking noise from 0-10 MPH and then it would go away only to return as a vibration at 60-80 MPH. I had the tires balanced and of course it didn't go away. My mechanic put it up on the lift this past weekend and sure enough, the rear u-joint on the 4-wheel drive shaft had failed. The truck has 50,000 miles on it and about 200 4X4 miles driving to and from work in the snow. Seems pretty quick for this to be failing!!!

The u-joints should be covered by powertrain warranty 5years or 60k miles.
