2001 xterra instrument panel/no start
My daughter was driving her xterra at night and all of the gauges on the instrument panel went to zero but the car was still running. She pulled over and turned off the car but could not restart it. The battery is good, but it will not turn over. V6 engine, manual transmission. I was able to start it by rolling it then popping the clutch. Drove it home with not gauges and it still will not start. Any help will be appreciated.

If your Xterra start by pushing with gear in first and clutch engaged and release when car is rolling you eliminate a few things like fuel pump/circuit issue, Immobilizer (anti-theft), ignition switch, ECM, etc. If CEL light is on, Scan computer for trouble code(s). If CEL is not lit, it means the problem is not monitored by computer. You need to study the Circuit Diagram of the Combination Meter circuit (cluster gauges) and trace a circuit that might share with ignition. At this point I'm inclined to point to fuse problem or Body Ground issue. It could also be a clutch switch issue. Also have someone step on the brake while you check if brake lights come on.
You can download the Engine Control manual or the Electrical Manual (EL) from here for free. Manuals are in the Knowledgebase section from the Menu tab at the top. |

So there was a bad fuse for the combination meter and I replaced it. started right up and blew the new fuse withing a few seconds. Any idea on where to start for checking grounds? I have checked the stored codes and they are p0464 fuel level sensor, p0500 vehicle speed senesor "A", and p0325 knock sensor-1 circuit bank 1 or single sensor. Reset them and same thing happened. Any help is greatly appreciated.

So now you know where the problem is. For body ground, you will need the Electrical (EL) Manual. You can also download from this site for free. Electrical problem can be pesky specially when it comes to "electrical short" issue. Also trace the circuit wiring as electrical shorts can be caused by damaged wire touching a a metal or two bare wires touching each other. So the manual is invaluable tool. You can ignore the trouble codes for now. When you solve the short problem, erase the codes by disconnecting the negative battery cable at least 20 minutes and then reconnecting it and see if the codes come back. You can also erase the codes with a Scanner. If the manual is not available for your model year, you can go back 2 years or forward 2 years and circuit should be similar. good luck.
