Intermittent misfire Cyl 1 - P0301
2005 Xterra, 114,000km
I recently experienced a misfire on cylinder one (rough running, blinking MIL, then MIL stayed on). When I checked the code it was P0301 indicating cylinder #1, of course its that one, cause its under that air intake and a B* to get to. When I got it home, I popped the center motor cover off and discovered that both vacuum tubes going into the vacuum can on top of the motor had been eaten by a rodent. This wasn't new damage either, with dust in the teeth marks. I replaced those hoses and also put 3/4 can of SeaFoam in the tank. Reset the codes. The next day driving, I experienced the misfire and flashing MIL once during the 25 minute commute but it didn't persist. I rechecked the codes and it showed a pending P0301. It hasn't happened again in 6 or 7 commuting trips. Today I took it out for an hour on the highway and it seems fine. I do still hear a slight hiss (vacuum?) on the passenger side of the motor but I can't locate where its coming from. When I used my Autel reader to monitor the live data, I noticed that the Oxygen Sensor Output Voltage Bank 1-Sensor 1 is consistently about half of the other 3 sensors. Attached is a spreadsheet I made of the results of a steady run. (up to column 37 is constant speed) (also included first few columns as a pic) Sorry for the long winded back story. My question is this. Is this normal, or is this a failed/failing sensor? Are there any other issues that this output shows? (there are some other oddities that I see in the output such as STFTB1S2 & STFTB2S2 numbers but lets start with this question) Last edited by chdunn; 07-18-2015 at 01:09 PM. |

I think the reading from the sensor are the result of the problem, it's very unlikely that the sensor is causing the P0301 code. Now unfortunately there are many things that could cause the cylinder misfire code. Since the problem is intermittent and you had rat damage, I suggest starting by checking the wires to the injector and coil on cyl #1.

Thanks Nissan tech, I'll have a look at the wires.
Do yo know if the numbers are outside of nominal for an '05? |
