2000 Xterra loud noise in front end suspension?
My 2000 Xterra makes a loud clunking noise when turning the front wheel backing up at slow speed. Ball joints perhaps? Bushings? What think you all? MTG

Unfortunately is a bit difficult to recommend a repair without hearing the noise, but from what you described it does sounds like a ball joint. How far do you have to turn the wheel to make the noise? do you have to turn all the way?

Have to turn the wheels only about 15-20 degrees to have this noise. Do not have to turn wheels all the way either way. I suspected ball joints but thought it would be sensible to post this question. MTG

Found both half shafts and one upper ball joint to be bad. All drive train, front and rear drive shaft "U" joints are good. Will be replacing bad parts. MTG
