Default Camshaft timing location

I am replacing the timing belt on my 2000 xterra, the #1 is at TDC on compression stroke but rhe right camshaft sprocket timing mark indicator is counterclockwise 6 teeth from the backplate mark indicator, do I rotate that camshaft clockwise to the backplate mark and install belt ?

The belt should have marks on it that line up with the marks on the gears. As long as those match up you are good to go.

CAUTION: Per Manual - Do not rotate crankshaft, camshaft separately after removing timing belt or valves and piston will collide.

You will neeed to re-install timing belt so crankshaft can be rotated so that Marks on both camshafts line up to the Mark on back plate and Marks on crankshaft sprocket. Then reposition timing belt. Refer to Engine Mechanical manual under Timing Belt.

The marks on the back cover are usually a tooth off compared to those on the cam sprockets on VG engines. Use the marks on the timing belt: dotted line mated to the passenger side cam sprocket mark and solids to the driver's cam sprocket and crank sprocket timing marks...arrow pointing to the front of the vehicle.
