Default 05 spark plugs

Do you have to remove the upper intake plenum to replace spark plugs on the 05 and up Xterras? My Chiltons manual says remove it but it looks like I can get the back two off ok. The front looks like you can get it with a combo wrench under the manifold. I prefer not to take off the manifold and replace gasket if the coil and plug will come out.

Unfortunately you have to, the problem is removing the coil.

Then I should replace the upper plenum gasket too. Is there anything else I should do with plenum removed at 115,000 miles?

i would do the sea foam 1/3 treatment through your brake booster line while your at it..... you can actually rotate the boot and it will come out..

the sea foam will clean the carbon deposits and you just want to use a thin stream instead of a river of the sea foam... once you pour the 1/3 , shut engine off for 5 minutes then start it to clean out ...

remember when replacing spark plugs you want engine block cool , if its warm the spark plugs will not enter all the way ..

Thanks. I did the plugs today. No seafoam. I actually did a Clean Rite 3 part fuel system clean about 2 weeks ago. I got 4 tires, alignment, oil change, 3 part fuel clean, and an engine flush. I did the plugs and upper plennum gaskets today. What do you use to treat new gaskets? I couldnt tell what was on my old ones and chiltons manual didnt say. I just rubbed to new ones on the old ones until they were lightly coated. Everything seems fine. I figure its like an oil filter gasket, just some lube to keep it from sticking to the lower manifold.

The upper plenum seals are silicone and you really didn't need to replace them unless they are damaged. They don't need anything on them when installing new ones. Just press them in and they're good. If you're worried about them sticking to the intake during installing, you can spray a light coat of spray silicone to the surface.

I highly recommend to not do an engine flush on any Nissan engine. Engine failure after is fairly common. Do a Google search and you should see plenty of cases.

I did an engine oil clean service at Sears. It is a Clean Rite product which is oil based with extra detergents added. I don't believe it has solvents but I will check. It's been about 3 weeks and no problems.

When I replaced the plugs on my 06 Pathy, I removed the upper plenum. When I replaced them on an 08 Pathy, I did it without removing the upper plenum. It's tricky, but can be done. The biggest issue is the #1 coil. I ended up disassembling the coil and removing it in two parts through the opening in the plenum (being careful not to loose the spring). When installing the coil, I first used a little silicone spray to make it easier to push the tube back into the top part of the coil when that time came. I got the tube part of the coil partially into the spark plug hole and then got the top part of the coil pack through the plenum opening, reassembled the coil and installed it. It's easier said than done...but can be done.

Interesting, I thought it looked possible. Thanks, if I keep the x long enough to replace them again will try it your way.
