Default PO420 code: Mechanic is sure it's the converter bank 1

I have an engine light code PO420. Took it to the mechanic to look at it and without inspecting the car, he said that it is the converter bank 1. (I understand that this is the most expensive of all of the possible problems related to this code). How would he know this without performing other tests? What are the possible reasons for this code? Should I take it to a Nissan dealer?

Thanks in advance-

You can confirm a bad convertor by monitoring the oxygen sensors for the affected bank. If it is bad the pattern for the rear sensor will look similar to the front. Just about every Nissan that I have worked on that showed a convertor code needed a convertor.
