2wd to 4wd conversion
Hi, I have recently been thinking about upgrading my 2wd Xterra X 6-speed manual transmission to 4wd. I know that many people recommend trading in for one that already has 4wd, but i'm willing to spend the money and invest the time into doing it. I do have some reservations though, in particular with the transmission. I have the repair manual for the vehicle and both the 2wd and the 4wd manual transmissions look very similiar with the exception of the tailhousing. So my question is would it be possible to simply switch out the 2wd tailhousing for a 4wd tailhousing. Also, I wanted to know if anyone could tell me what other parts I would need beyond the following: Transfer Case, T-Case wiring harness, front and rear drive shafts, front final drive, both front axles, and the two wheel hubs? Also, are the wheel hubs locking or are they something different. I would like to use as much stock equipment as possible to help avoid some of the complications with matching up parts.
Thanks in advance for any input! |

You are probably going to need the rear final drive also. You need to make sure that both the front and rear gear ratios are the same.

ok, could I use the rear final drive that is already on the 2wd configuration? If so how would I find out what the gear ratio is? Thanks for the info!
