Help! Versa Hatchback strut confusion
I need someone to confirm if you actually need to remove the windshield cowling(cowl top) in order to reach the rear bolt of the upper strut mounting. My Daughter's Versa has two rubber plugs in the cowling above the strut rear upper mounting bolt, one on each side. However, the Factory service manual claims you need to remove the cowling(cowl top) before having access to this bolt.
Before I start I'd like to know. The Factory service manual was completely incorrect in regards to replacing the headlight bulbs, so I'm suspicious of these instructions especially since they do not show the plugs in the cowling. If it were my car, I'd just pop the plugs and peek. But it is not and my Daughter would prefers I knew rather than guess before I get started. It seems ridiculous to go through all the steps to remove the windshield cowling(cowl top). I noticed the upper mounting holes are slotted, do these bolts move in the slots or is it a means for alignment? If alignment, than that makes me all the more convinced the rubber plug allows access to the rear bolt. I understand the strut must be installed under unladen conditions, which only make sense. ANY suggestions, comments or prior experience would be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!!! |

You can get to the bolts without removing the cowl. On the passenger side there is a part of the cowl that comes off and will give you plenty of room to see the bolts. The driver's side is a little more difficult. You have to go through the hole for the plug.
