1.8 head gasket
Curious as to how long a 1.8 head gasket really takes. I've seen the nissan warranty time and the alldata labor times. I got consistent misfire codes on 2 and 3. Now that I've fixed the fuel pressure issue it throws 0302 and 0303 consistently. Verified water in cylinder after cool down.
I'm just wondering though if this is more of the loosen head, lift slightly, pop in new gasket and go type of job. I am very familiar with DSM and hyundai head gaskets and I'm a toyota, mitsu and hyundai dealership ase certified tech, just no real nissan hands on experience. Any good tips from Nissan techs here for this job? Thanks in advance for any tips, I'd really appreciate it. Car is question is my daughter's '05 Sentra 1.8. Out of warranty by mileage. |

well if u got a water in the cylenders it might be a crack in their too like a water jacket. u might have to take it apart and take a look at it. if u know its the head then why not use a ruler and test to see if everyhting is streight.

The problem is only in the head gasket. So if you feel safe to simply lift the head up, then roll with it. It's a pretty simply head to remove, making for an easy repair.

I would take the head off completely. You will want to clean the surfaces before you put the new gasket on. They usually have some corrosion around the water jackets. The head is really simple to remove. Remove the exhaust manifold to cylinder head bolts and the 2 brakets that attach it to the block, you can pull the manifold off the studs and just let it sit there. Disconnect the wiring going to the various components on the intake and coils and set the harness to the side. Disconnect 2 braces at the back of the intake and the 2 ground screws on the backside. Disconnect the coolant hoses.Remove the valve cover and the small timing gear cover. Line up marks on the gears and paint marks on the chain to help with reassembly. Remove the chain tensioner and gears and set the chain down into the cover. Remove the cams and then the head bolts. You can now lift the head and intake off as an assembly. The job can easily be done in a couple hours.

You will have to completely remove the head to install a new head gasket. Be aware that the proper way to reinstall the head gasket is to use a "angle torque gauge to set the head bolts.

If you don't have a torque angle gauge you can torque the head bolts to about 65 -70 ft lbs. That usually works just fine. I don't bother with the torque angles.Alot of the sentra heads I remove have bolts that are loose so I figure that method is not very reliable. I have done 15-20 sentras and set them at 65 ft lbs and never had a problem.

You guys are awesome! I have always found it hard to find decent ubb's for rides other than DSM's. Thank you very much for the info.
I figured about the corrosion and wondered if you guys were seeing that crap on these heads. |
