2003 Senrta GXE 1.8 steering rack & pinion
My steering rack started leaking seems to be at the main rack seam where it is swedged. I looked at the install/remove from the manual I got from this site. It warns about centering wheels and removing the steering wheel to avoid damaging the "srs spiral cable". Why is this a problem as the steering joint and column shaft move all the time when driving. I'm not really sure what they mean? Is this necessary or dnagerous when replacing the rack and pinion assy? Thanks for any info.

The spiral cable can only turn certain amount of turns to either way, I'm not but I think is around 4. If it goes more than that it will damage in the internal parts of the spiral

Ok if you stop steering wheel from moving?
Ok then if you stop steering wheel from moving by tieing or taping column?

Yes you can do that or before you remove the steering rack straighten the wheels as best as possible, remove the keys from the ignition and lock the steering wheel. Since you already know that the steering (and spiral cable) is in the middle before you connect the the new steering rack center the wheels and then connect the steering column to the rack.

Need advice on Brand Selection for Rack n Pinion
Hi,
I need to replace the Rack & Pinion for my 2003 Sentra GXE. Could you recommend an economical brand which is reliable too? There is a cheaper option from FENCO Vs costlier option from A1 Cardone. Not able to decide which one to go for. Any help would be appreciated. Deepak |
