OBD code 1001 & dead instrument panel, 2003 Sentra

Greetings,


My son's old Sentra (185K miles) recently picked up a new problem that I can use some help troubleshooting. All of the instrument panel gauges and I suspect some of the idiot lights are non-functional now, and if I scan for OBD codes, I get a 1001 code. According to my son, this problem used to be an intermittent thing that would happen occasionally, that he would "fix" by shutting the car off & restarting.


Anyway, I consulted the car's Factory Service Manual (FSM), and found this is likely an issue with the LAN (CAN bus), which is a "type 1" LAN (1.8L engine, with AT). The FSM is light on details on how to best approach troubleshooting this, so I was hoping someone has some practical tips & tricks to share.


I read that a weak/low voltage battery can cause such problems, so I tested that and we ruled that out as a problem.
