Default Water Control Valve question

Would somebody please tell me what does the water control valve do and where is it on the 2003 Sentra. This is not the thermostat. I would really appreciate the assistance.

Actually it IS a stat just like the other one. Nissan likes to use one on both ends of the major engine cooling circuit, likely to promote a faster warmup to go to closed loop slightly faster, it lowers emissions.

One stat takes water off the lower rad hose to go INTO engine, it is NOT the main one, only the supply one, which opens around 180ish in temp. The other one is to the top rad hose coming OUT OF the engine and is the normal stat as envisioned on all old school cars. That one is the one that actually regulates the engine temperature provided the other has opened up correctly. It works at like 195+ F or so.

BOTH are thermostats, one opens before the other to always have coolant ready when needed for the actual regulating one. Nissan to make things worse tends to call them the opposite thing. The higher temp one is for sure the actual thermostat there. They don't call both thermostats as that causes confusion when looking up parts. Like the difference in a muffler and resonator, both are actually mufflers but they have to be able to tell the parts apart to avoid mistakes.

I believed the two thermostat set-up was only used on the QR25DE engine in the Sentra, not on the MR18DE. Here's a link to a part diagram for the QR25DE to show the locations of the two thermostats:
