Default 2002 Sentra XE ECM Trouble

I am trying to help out my sister who is a single parent with limited financial means. She purchased her 2002 Sentra approximately 5 weeks ago. It is a exceptionally clean with 110,00 miles on it.

The CEL came on soon after she obtained the car. She went by the local AZ and they told her it was displaying a bad O2 sensor. She took the Sentra to a local mechanic who replaced the O2 sensor in the car. This did NOT clear the CEL light. The mechanic stated she needed to take it to the Nissan dealer as it appeared the ECM was bad.

The Nissan dealer checked the car and replaced the ECM for $900.00 plus. Immediately after getting her car back the CEL once again came on. Back to the Nissan dealer who says "well look at that, your catalytic converter is now bad, gimme $1000.00 and we can make it happy".

As a big brother, I start to wonder if this is just coincidence or if they may have diagnosed the problem in the first place.

This leads to my question. When the ECM was replaced I told my sister to get the old ECM from the dealer, and she did. If we replace the catalytic converter and all codes clear with the new ECM, can I place the old ECM back in the car without it being reprogrammed? If this is possible and the codes clear with the old ECM, I feel Nissan just guessed wrong initially and should refund my sister the original charge for the ECM replacement.

Thanks.

BigT

Yeah, you could reinstall the old ECM. You may need to do some relearning of the idle air volume and closed throttle position. I believe you'll be okay with the keys as the old ECM should retain the memory for them. If you do install the old one and notice the anti-theft light does not turn out with the key "on," you'll know you need to re-initialize the keys. My concern is how the catalytic converter is failed (inefficient or restrictive) and why it through an oxygen sensor code and not a catalyst efficiency code? Also, if it's restrictive, you need to find out why? Could be something else going on. If it's a 1.8L, I would be concerned about a possible head gasket leak.
