2000 Nissan Sentra with codes P0505, P0420, P1491, P1126
All four codes have come up at once. P0505 Idle control, P0420 Catalyst Low Bank One, P1491 VC Cut Valve Bypass Valve Fault, P1126 ETC Motor Open Circuit. Now the problem is what can be done to fix the problem. Will changing the thermostat take care of some of the problem. Will a new catalytic converter do it. How much would all this cost. Probably more than the car is worth.

Fault Codes - Cost
I have just completed canceling and repairing several of the codes that you have now. The most expensive has been the P4030/P4020(catalytic converter). Cost for converter along can very. A muffler shop wanted ~$1,000+-. They wanted $800~ for the converter, I did it myself and saved 50%+. The most frustrating has been the P1491. I believe I am about to resolve that one and let you know findings within a couple of days. If you have mechanical ability and research a little you can save a lot, but at minimum depending on the converter style on your vehicle you can expect to spend ~$400+. The question to ask yourself...do you want car payments?
Good luck. |

RESOLVED: The 1491 was the result of the 'vacuum cut-bypass valve'. This is a valve with 4 connectors to it located in the line to the charcoal canister. Mine was broken during an accident. The dealer wanted $149 for a new one. (Today's cost of parts like this is rediculous, but that's an entire new thread.) There are certain parts obtainable from your local 'Auto Recycle Corp.'(Junk yard...). They are going to be your best friend. All my issues where solved after replacing the valve and retesting. No more 'Check Engine' lights for me. Good Luck!
