timing belt
1997 Nissan Quest. Is the timing belt a belt or chain? Is it the type that if it breaks interferes with the motor to cause serious damage or is the noninterference type where it won't harm the motor?

Actually, the Quest is the only vehicle with a timing belt from Nissan that will not bend valves if the belt breaks. That was part of the agreement that Nissan made with Ford in producing the Quest van.

This got me thinking. I have a 2008 Quest and emailed Nissan asking if the van has a timing belt or chain. Their response for my 2008 model: Dear XXXXXX, Thank you for taking the time to personally contact us about your interest in Nissan products. In regards to your email, all the 2008 Nissan Quest has timing chain. We hope that this information answers your question, but if you need any additional information or have further questions, please let us know by reply e-mail or by calling 1-800-647-7263 and pressing "0" for a live operator. Also, make sure to take a look at our website, www.NissanUSA.com, for the most up-to-date product information. ....so did the earlier Quests use a timing belt then? When did they switch over to a timing chain? |

Good job Deeznuts...Its true Nissan and Ford did sleep in the same bed for awhile. It does have a belt and also that belt has seen some changes over the years. If replacement is in it's future make sure it goes on with the face on the belt facing the correct way or a noise it will make. Chains didn't find it's way to that engine untill the went to the new body style. 3.5 motor i think it was.Take a close look at an old Ford aerostar and you will see the little Nissan 'Hamburger" all over it.And thats concludes todays history lession.

No one is agreeing!
Nobody is agreeing on belt vs chain! Which is it? I want to know too!
If belt, non-interference or not - no one is agreeing on that either! |

Nissan used a belt up until the 3.5 was installed (2005 model I believe). Your 1997 uses a belt, not a chain. The timing belts were non-interference/freewheeling (no damage would occur). Again, that was a stipulation set into place by Ford. The Quest was a joint venture between Nissan and Ford.

interference or not???
My friends 1995 van broke his timing belt. His mechanic told him that it is interference and he was going to scrap and replace the van. he has been unemployed for a long while and can hardly afford that. I'm going by their check it to see if their is valves damage.
What is the easiest way to check for valve damage??? |
