It appears that 1993 - 1998 are not an interference engine.
Ive read where 6 people have replaced belts after the belt failed. Of those 6, 5 engine ran fine. The one exception was a do it yourself-er that could not start his engine after replacing the belt. He never posted his conclusion. one example http://www.cardomain.com/ride/527950 I just had a 1995 villager with a broken belt towed to a mechanic today. He is puting a belt on it for me. I'll post the results. (he also believes it is a interference engine) we will see. It does show that the Ford /Nissan modification for this engine was based on it being non interference. Tech2, if you have any FIRST HAND experiences that says differently, please post them. Thanks Last edited by yourfishman; 02-27-2010 at 02:43 PM. |

Since Nissan and ford got together on this joint venture, re Quest/Villager, ford required that the engines be NON-interferance. Put a belt on it and drive it.

Now for some more confusion, ALL Nissan engines ARE interferance engines EXCEPT the Quest/Villager. This means damage will occur if the belt breaks or chain is damaged and pistons hit valves, except on the Quest with the 3.0 ltr engine. The 3.5 and 4.0 engines are chains and interferance engines.

The new belt worked great!! Non interference for sure on this 3.0 villager.
Down side the water pumped leeks bad after they replaced the belts. Im sure they pushing on for leverage or something. Anyway they are replacing the pump at a discounted price. Good info Jacko Last edited by yourfishman; 03-03-2010 at 05:17 AM. |

The water pump should have been replaced as part of the service as per the service manual along with belt tentioner. That being said,if not then you are looking at a "come back".

Yes, the 1997 Nissan Quest 3.0L has a timing belt.
I am in the process of replacing the timing belt on my 97 Nissan Quest 3.0L and found this forum and saw that you are having a debate about whether it has a chain or belt. LOL So, I decided to post a photo of the timing belt, so you can see it for yourself. YES, the 97 Nissan Quest 3.0L has a VG30E engine and many other cars have the same. This engine uses a timing belt, not a chain! Here is photo proof.
(Or you can just simply go on ebay and type in the words "1997 Nissan Quest timing belt" and you'll see a bunch of timing belts for sale for that particular vehicle, so that's another way to find out...) BTW I found step-by-step instructions on how to replace the timing belt on AutoZone's website : https://www.autozone.com/repairguide...96b43f81b3d2cc More proof: "Specific to: Mercury Villager 1993-2000, Nissan Quest 1993-2000 The 3.0L and 3.3L engines utilize a timing belt to drive the camshafts from the crankshaft's turning motion and to maintain proper valve timing... The 3.0L and 3.3L engines are not listed as interference motors (they are not listed by the manufacturer as a motor whose valves might contact the pistons if the camshafts were rotated separately from the crankshaft)..."
