Surge on deceleration
1995 Quest, owned since new, 202,805.1 miles, original engine and trans, never removed, never wrecked, still gets 22MPG highway mileage, Well maintained no codes from the OBD.
For the last 50K miles: Upon deceleration from highway speeds above 65 mph, as van freely decelerates (not braking) through 60mph downward through 50 mph, experience 300-500rpm surging at 1.5 second intervals, which dissipates as speed gets below 50mph and is gone by 40MPH (at least not noticeable). Surging is worse in hotter (summer) outside air temps. |

You may want to try a fluid change. It is somewhat of a risk changing the fluid at that high of mileage because I have seen some very high mileage transmissions just stop moving after a fluid change but your problem may be just fluid that is breaking down. Of course at that mileage it is possible that you have a transmission that is getting worn out.

Do the fluid change at regular18mo intervals ago- no change.
No slipping. No gear hunting. Acceleration downshifting then up-shifts as it should. Seems if I maintain ever so slight gas pedal pressure when coasting/decelerating, it won't surge. When it is surging, seems you can feel it push against the torque converter at peak rpm gain. Then is rolls off smoothly. I get about 5 cycles of this when costing on flat road to a stop between 60-50 mph. It will do more cycles over a longer time frame if coasting/decelerating downhill. Surge with overdrive on and off If you put it in neutral while coasting rpm spools down to idle cleanly. ? Last edited by tomcanard; 03-17-2008 at 01:04 PM. Reason: add data point |

Just some more background:
Same surge pattern with cruise control disconnected. 02 sensor changed last year- no difference. Could not find any vacuum leaks but changed all lines under the hood anyway out of guilt. Been chase this one for a while. Wondering if EGR valve could be modulating? I'm at the point of changing parts in sequence, thinking PSP Switch IAC/AAC EGR Valve with BRT Valve And Control Sol Valve Don't want to put a ton of money into it anymore. We're well past the point of diminishing returns. More interested in keeping it going until something catastrophic pops just to see how far it'll go! Surge is more annoying then anything else. |
