Default 2012 Quest tailgate wont stay up

Have an interesting problem in my 2012 Quest tailgate this week - motor will take it all the way up, but instead of locking in the raised position when it gets to the top, it starts to drop a few inches every few seconds in short controlled bursts! When it reaches the bottom, it will lock. If I interrupt the controlled fall by holding it up, it then disengages and falls quickly to the fully closed position. If I turn off the power, when I raise to the top position manually, it will just drop immediately - again not latching in the top position.

Anybody got any ideas? I seem to remember that it 'locked' in the up position by a type of mechanical action, not just held up by the gas struts....am I imagining that, or is it so? I'm hoping it's just a loose bolt or something in the mechanism, not a complete motor replacement at $1k plus....it was 94 here in ATL today, so hope it cools down this weekend when I have to start pulling of panels to access the mechanism :-)

One or both of your struts are weak, motor will lift the door and the struts hold it open, easy fix.
