BCM Replacement?
I have a 2008 Quest. Manufacture date 5/08. Having a lot of electrical issues such as back gate not working (just solid beep if handle depressed on outside), windows not working correctly, constant beeping at times (seems worse if raining). Talked to a few local mechanics as well as Nissan dealership and all have said it sounds like the BCM is going bad. My question is if I buy a BCM off of a wrecked Quest (which I did today) same year model and after Feb. manufacture date. Can I basically just plug and Play or does it need to be flashed? I am getting conflicting reports as to this. Just need to make sure if I go through the trouble of removing and replacing that it will still start and run as it is my only vehicle.

First, I wouldn't purchase a used BCM for these vehicles as they are a common failure and I'm sure there are plenty of bad ones in the salvage yards. Next, I'm almost certain that the keys are programmed to the BCM. In earlier years, Nissan learned the key memory to the ECM, but later learned them to the BCM starting around 2003 on some models. That would mean your vehicle wouldn't start unless you had the dealer program the keys after you replaced the module or found a locksmith that has the equipment to do such. You could get the BCM, drive it to the dealer or locksmith and replace it there and then have them do the key initialization. Make sure you have all of your keys when they do it!

Thank you smj999smj. I did NOT want to get a used one but my wallet right now will not give me any other choice. Nissan quoted me $1300.00 installed price. I just cant stand that right now. So just for clarification, I have the used BCM in hand. Are you saying I should run it to Nissan first and have them program it before I try to replace it? If I replace it first there is a chance it will not start due to it not being programmed? My ONLY saving grace is that it came off a vehicle with only 23000 miles on it so even though it had some age it is VERY low mileage (if that even matters).

1. I agree with "smj999smj", if you install the new BCM you will have a no start condition as keys need to shake hands with BCM and ECM.
2. Best thing you can do is talk to service manager and tell him you have the replacement part if they allow you to bring your own part. What is the cost of installations and programming. My estimate is probably not more than 2 hrs of labor. You might even cut in down if you remove anything along the way such as part of the dash panel, etc., so the tech don't have to do it. He just might take you in on a slow day. BEWARE: If replacement BCM is faulty you still have to pay the shop. That's the risk you have to take. Try shop online for a new BCM. |

Yes, the new part will have to be installed in order for them to program it. It gets done with a Consult II or III scan tool through your vehicle's OBD II connector.
