Default 2007 Quest Timing Belt

82000 miles- No problems until I started the van yesterday. Service engine light came on immediately. Vibration felt inside vehicle.

I was about a mile from a Nissan dealership. Got in before service dept closed. Diagnostic indicated something with timing belt/chain. But guy assured me we could get home safely (roughly 75 miles).

We stayed at dealership and they tried to make a sale. At first, they were not giving much leverage with van because of "potential" problems, but they later were offering much more on a trade to get the sale. Finally had AAA tow it home.

Few questions: assuming it is a timing belt, how much would replacing it cost?

Is this something that should be done at a dealership or can most mechanics handle this?

Is it a chain or belt?

How much damage can be done by driving it to dealership/mechanic?

First off, your van is equipped with a timing chain. Secondly, its difficult to say what exactly is the issue, that is, is it the timing guides only or something else. Any competent mechanic should be able to do the job. Make calls and ask for estimates and also ask if the shop had similar job. I would not attempt to drive it in the event it is the timing chain that might break off. For your model year and mileage its highly unlikely but you'll never know. Drive If You Must At Your Own Peril.
