Strange problem 2014 sentra sv cvt

Sometimes (maybe about 1 in 7) when trying to get up to freeway speeds my sentra will get to 40 mph and instead of continuing to accelerate the rpms will just keep climbing (upto and sometimes past redline) and I'm stuck going 40. I can hear the engine is actually going at very high rpms. So I let off the gas and the rpms stay very high. Slowly I'll start to decelerate until the rpms finally drop below 3k. At which point I let back on the gas and it still can't go past 40 mph and the rpms just rocket back up. If I pull over to the shoulder and come to a full stop The problem will fix itself.

I have 73000 miles. I had the transmission fluid changed about a year and a half ago at 58000 for preventative. It started maybe 3 weeks ago when my battery died. I jumped it with my truck and tried to drive to work only to find I couldn't get past 40. The next day on the way to buy a new battery it happened again. Since the new battery it's happened maybe 6 times.

I understand it's a cvt so I don't want to say "shift", but It feels like the ratio is stuck and won't change.

maybe a related symptom is when I coast to slow to a stop the "down shift" is jerky.

Sorry for the long post. Also if it's in the wrong place. I've looked in a few forums and googled my heart out but haven't even found someone with the same problem, let alone a solution. Thank you in advance for any help.
