Timing Belt

I have a 2000 xterra with 121,000+ and I'm wondering if it's time to change the Timing Belt out with a new one? What is the cost at the shop if I have them do it? Thanks in advance

I would go ahead and get it done. The manual states also to change the water pump since the tech is in there anyway.A dealership will be way more exspensive so i would shop around and find a good shop to do the work.

Here in Ga, it cost me $550.00 at my mechanic's to change my daughter's 2000X. That was timing belt, water pump, other belts too. There is a bypass coolant hose behind the water pump, be sure and get it changed too. She had 120K. Don't wait that long, should be done at around 105K.

Timing Belt Broke

My daughter coasted into a parking space just as the timing belt broke at 130K. Should have replaced it long before this. She was lucky. Since she was not accelerating, no damage was done. Could have lost the engine to this oversight. Replace it at 105K, along with the other recommended major parts.

Uh, oh...My Xterra is a Canadian-spec, reads in kilometers...I have 203,489 kilometers...126,442 miles...

Where are you guys getting these recommended replacement parts mileage/listings from???

Mine broke yesterday at 142,000. Mechanic said it should have been replaced at about 90-100,000. My distributor went in March, and he told me it was just a matter of time before the timing belt broke. They will put a new belt on just to see if it runs and if any other damage was done for $550. It could be just that, or up to $2500 if heads or valves were damaged. I wasn't accelerating either, so hopefully there's nothing else going on in there!

$550 is cheap if you get the water pump and hoses replacesd. I might go ahead and replace the thermostat while I was in there also. Make sure they use they correct coolant. They do not mix correctly. Also make sure the system is bleed for air when they are complete. Air pockets will destroy the head gaskets before to long if that happens. Tom

Hi guys i tell you something today i brok my timing belt on my 93 ford mustang 2.3 l. I have read that My engin should be fine because it is not an interferance engin and that there is plenty of room. I have removed the cover and started trying to get the belt on.!!!!
