Default P0420 code - change 02 sensor bank 1 -2002 pf

hi
i have a 2002 pathfinder with a p00420 code. i know several things can cause this but was thinking of trying 02 sensor on upstream side first and then maybe swap catalytic converter on that side. im not sure what else because the code says "catalyst system efficiency below threshold bank 1".

anyway, i tried to access the o2 sensor but i cannot from the wheel well on passenger side because there seems to be some kind of steel plate in the way that isnt removable. some other videos i have watched seem to access it via extension from the top using a universal joint impact socket. i tried this but i cant get the slotted 7/8 socket aligned with it. the space is unbelievable tight unless you take apart a ton of stuff on top which i believe are coolant and transmission related type pipes. am i missing something to get this out. i have no idea how to get in here and i am loathe to take it to a mechanic because i just want to try the sensor first to see if code goes off. believe it or not,i think it would almost be easier to swap the cat out and get that sensor from underneath at the same time except i dont want to buy a cat if i dont need it. the oreilly auto guys think that its usually the cat with this code though. thing is if i swap the upstream sensor am i trying to get, should i also do the downstream below that cat too? my 2002 pathfinder has around 161k miles. i have tried hard to find a video for my year but no luck. seems 2001-2004 is a bit different from 2000 and before and 2005 and later.

thanks!
