Oil in coolant and coolant in oil
1999 pathfinder with peanut butter looking fluid through radiator, hoses, coolant resevoir, and heater core. Also the oil filler cap and walls inside the filler tank have the same stuff. I'm assuming it's motor oil and not transmission fluid because it is also just in the oil filler tank and i check transmission dip stick and clean. And also when draining this fluid out of the radiator i saw, not alot but occasionally, a little bubble of red transmission fluid going out with it.
Questions: 1. Do i have this right that it is motor oil? 2. Does that mean it is the oil cooler or headgasket? I'm thinkking its oil cooler leak because drain after drain it would still keep coming heavy from the radiator like it was being produced there. No bubbles in radiator and also no smoke from tail pipe. 3. I'm confused on th oild cooler. Does motor oil and transmission oil pass through the oil cooler. Online they are saying its for transmission, if so then why and where am i getting motor oil from? 4. Best info on fixing the issue |

1. Very dirty coolant could also look like oil residue
2. If in fact there is oil in the coolant system, then is a head gasket. 3. There no engine oil cooler on your vehicle, there is transmission fluid cooler inside the radiator. 4. If the engine is not overheating, there are no leaks, and coolant level is OK, then just change the coolant.

Thanks so much for your response. And exactly answered what I asked.
1. Coolant dirty from what? You're saying that this peanut butter looking stuff could be just dirty coolant and not the head gasket or oil cooler? 2.no questions, thank you. 3. When looking at my radiator, it appears to me that the cooler is in front of the radiator. Or is that something else. It's a little smaller than the radiator. I would take pics but it's cold outside and late so i'll take some tomorrow if still needed. 4. Is this the fix in regards to if the coolant is just dirty? |

I really don't think it's just dirty coolant. The same fluid is in the oil tank. The car sounds horrible now. All of my oil and coolant are burning up extremely fast. transmission color and level is stable and the same

1. Particles from the engine, but I don't know how it is. Do you have a picture?
2. 3. Some models have that extra exterior cooler. 4. Yes, the fix if is just dirt. Quote:
