Angry Engine seal...

A few days ago, I noticed a large puddle of oil underneath the front end. I added oil and didn't drive it because I was sick. This morning I got under the truck to see where the oil is leaking from. Well, it doesn't look good. The leak is coming from behind the main drive pulley; oil in a steady stream when the engine is running. That means the front engine seal is blown, correct?
This engine has only 72,000 miles on it. Needless to say, I'm very angry. This truck has been a money pit from day one. Any suggestions?

It "could" be the front crank seal. It could also be the oil cooler "O" ring, which is a common failure; the oil cooler is the part that the oil filter screws onto and sits just to the passenger side of the crank pulley. Neither is a "major" job to replace; either part is cheap, so it's mostly labor that makes up the cost of the job.

I had the truck up on the ramps, with the engine running. I saw the oil running in a steady stream from behind the main drive pulley, down the front side of the engine. Is that the front crank seal? I'm sure the part is cheap. How much is the labor for something like that? That has to be a big job.

Hi SMJ999,
I heard back from a friend I worked with late last night. He used to be a mechanic for a Nissan dealership. Your'e right, he is pretty certain it is the front crankseal and he says he can take care of it for $150-200.00. I've had so many things go wrong with this truck, I had to promise my wife that any more big repairs, I would dump it. This is after a transmission and engine replacement, among other things. Well, it makes no sense to dump it for a $200. repair, so I have to wait until the weekend before he can get to it. Thanks.
