Default 2001 pathfinder serpentine belt replacement

Just got a 2001 pathfinder with 66k miles on. On cold start, it squeaks really bad for a minute or so, serpentine belt is original, i figure it's time for replacement regardless.

Looks like the fan clutch is in the way(it's bolted onto one of the pulleys), does that mean I have to remove the fan first? do I have to remove the radiator also?

Can you post a photo?

Typically there's enough room between the fan and the fan shroud to "thread" belts over the fan and into the right position.

I think you're right, there is some clearance between the fan and the radiator but looks like it'd be pita to loop the belt around all the pulleys withe fan clutch in the way.

That's why they make serpentine belt guide tools like this:

Well, if you're going to remove the fan clutch, a special homemade long 10mm wrench might help to access the 4 nuts without cutting up your hands.

But - if you do remove the fan clutch, the pulley underneath it will be loose, and that defeats the purpose, hurts what you are trying to do !!!

Thanks guys. The guide tool seems like a good idea.

Would like to change the smaller belt to the right of the serpentine belt as well. what's the name of that belt? does the same procedure apply (ie, use a tool to push down the tensioner, remove belt, install etc?)

any surprise/gotchas I should be aware of?

The smaller belt is likely a separate air conditioner compressor belt; with a single belt for everything, a seized AC compressor could break the belt and disable/damage the engine. The samll belt should install similarly. From your photo posted earlier, the main belt looks like it has 6 ribs, so Gates Century Series Micro-V K060465 - V-Ribbed Belt | O'Reilly Auto Parts

The smaller AC belt would be Gates Century Series Micro-V K040372 - V-Ribbed Belt | O'Reilly Auto Parts

My Frontiers and daughter's '98 Pathfinder have separate belts, not a serpentine set up; but Mrs. Cusser's 2005 GMC uses a main serpentine belt and a small serpentine AC belt.

for the serpentine belt, I just ordered this, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 supposed to be really quiet, read some good reviews on youtube, formerly gatorback.

still need to buy the ac belt though.

I use Gates or Goodyear belts on mine. Factory belts are considered good too, but don't know who makes them (there is no Nissan belt factory).

From your first photo, looked like your main belt had 6 ribs, but the link photo shows 4. So double-check.

Nissan belts are made by Bando and Mitsuboshi. Bando is pretty easy to find; Rockauto.com, NAPA and Federated Auto Parts carry them, among others. There is no need to remove the fan.

belts should arrive by tomorrow, then will start work on it.

If I'm just replacing the belts and not any of the idler pulleys, I could just use a ratchet to push down on the tensioner(idler pulley) counterclockwise from the top to loosen the belt, right? No need to jack up the car, loosen idler pulleys from the bottom, right?

Found this diagram, btw.

Your page you posted is for checking belt tension, not changing belts.

Seethis, see if your engine is similar Serpentine Belt (fan belt) Replacement

yeah, read that thread before posting. it said "Use a wrench to de-tension the idler pulley/tensioner, then slip off the old belt." but didn't give too much details.

Am I turning the wrench counterclockwise? It's really stuck, need some kind long tube for leverage.

also got the serpentine belt tool from HB, Serpentine Belt Tool Kit. Not much use to me
