done! no more crazy squeaking sound! Thanks for all your help.

things I took away from this:
1. remove the splash guard that's protecting the fan
2. loose the tensioner bolt all the way, would have saved me some struggling when getting the new belt on.
3. count the turns when u loosen the tensioner bolt, for me it was 11. when I tighten it, i simply reapply that many turns. when i check for tension, that gives me just about enough lead way to turn the belt 90 degrees.

project for next week: transmission fluid change. A first also.

The fluid change is easy. You'll need about 4-1/2 quarts of transmission fluid; don't use Dexron III/Mercon. Some will use nothing but NissanMatic Type "D" ATF, which is fine and what the manufacturer specifies, although it is a bit costly. Type "D" is the original Dexron formula. There are many synthetics on the aftermarket that will work just as good if not better; two of them are Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Castrol Transmax Multi-import ATF, which are less expensive than the Type "D." The drain plug gasket is Nissan #11026-01M02. Warm up the vehicle and turn off. Place a pan under the transmission to catch the fluid. Use a 19MM wrench to remove the plug and drain the fluid. Replace the gasket on the drain plug and install. Torque to spec (I think it's 26 ft/lbs, if my memory is good). Remove the dipstick and install 4 quarts of ATF. Start the vehicle, check the level of the fluid with the vehicle on a level surface and top off as needed.
