Default Safe to Replace Timinng Chain Without J-48761 Tool

I've heard you can bump the starter with a breaker bar against something solid to break the crankshaft pulley bolt loose if you don't have the ring gear stopper tool J-48761. Is this safe or is there a possibility of breaking or screwing something up?

I think I answer this question already on another forum. Yes, there is the possibility of breaking something...namely the starter housing; I saw this happen to a Nissan VG33E starter. Bottom line is that the ring gear stopper is not only for holding the starter to loosen and tighten the crank pulley bolt, but also to loosen and tighten the cam gear bolts which need to be removed when replacing the upper timing chains. When you torque the cam bolts, it is the timing chains and the fixed crank that hold the cam gears in place and allow you to tighten them. If you don't have and can't find the stopper tool, then you'll have to use a 1/2" impact gun on the crank pulley bolt and you'll need to remove both valve covers so you can put a wrench on the cams and hold them in place while you loosen/tighten the cam bolts.
