04 pathfinder occasionally stuttering & dying at stop lights. Now tries, but unable to start
04 pathfinder has been occasionally stuttering and stopping when stopping at a stop light. Again, occasionally, when starting to accelerate from a stop light the engine would seem to stutter, then catch and run fine.
We recently noticed a whining/whistling noise coming from the passenger side. Yesterday my wife was running errands and the car died. She was able to get it to a parking lot where she called me. She tried to restart it, but, while it would turn over, it wouldn't start. It seemed to not be getting any gas. 4 hours later, after the tow truck got there, she got home. Trying to diagnose further, I tried to start the car. It started and moved in reverse a short distance then a short distance forward. I decided to take it for a test drive around the block. I got about 100 feet and it began stuttering. I was able to get it to the entrance to our driveway, where it died. I attempted to start it, but it only turned over, no start. This morning I attempted to start it, and it started, ran rough, then died. Attempts to restart it ended with it turning over and not catching, like it was not getting any fuel. It appears to be the fuel filter or fuel pump. I've done some research on the internet and that is what most closely (almost to a "T") matches the symptoms. Any ideas? BTW, this is our only vehicle and the nearest mechanic or parts store is NOT within walking distance (especially at 118*) |

Well, it would make sense to replace the fuel filter, which is oddly located in the area above the rear axle. The best thing to do would be to check the fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge to make sure it's within specs. If you don't have one, many auto parts stores have a loaner program. The fuel pump, if that's the problem, is accessible through an access cover under the rear seat, which is nice because you don't have to drop the fuel tank to replace it. I always recommend using genuine Nissan fuel pumps, as I've run into a lot of poor quality, aftermarket pumps over the years. CourtesyParts.com or NissanPartsDeal.com are good places to get genuine Nissan parts at a discount. Hopefully, it's just the filter!
