Rear clunk from transmission or driveshaft?
Hi Folks- I've got a 2000 Pathfinder (automatic) with 175k on it. I've noticed a clunk sound between 40-45 mph. You can actually feel a slight bump. That's the only time it does it, it makes the sound once then everything seems fine. Sounds/feels like it's coming from the tranny or driveshaft. Any ideas on where to start looking or what it could be? Thanks.

Check the rear upper links, it's very common for the links bushings to fail and produce a clunk noise. You don't need to replace the entire link, you can replace just the bushings. If possible replace the bushings from the lower links as well.

Personally, if it was the rear link bushings, I would get new, Dorman complete links from Rockauto.com. The bushings are a bit of a pain to replace and the Dorman links have a lifetime warranty. Also, be prepared to need bolts as often they will rust to the collar of the bushings and the links need to be cut out. I would also check the rear shocks, the U-joints and sway bar links.

Thanks. That definitely points me in the right direction.

**Update**
The rear shocks were definitely shot. I replaced those and so far my "clunk" has disappeared. Thanks again for the help. |
