98 Pathfinder oscillates side to side dangerously
My 98 Pathfinder oscillates side to side dangerously above 40 mph or so.
It seems to happen more often when accelerating down hill, but goes away as soon as I let off the gas. I've got new struts and shocks front and back, so what could it be? |

Forgive me, but I'm very ignorant in this area.
Are you talking about the bushings in the photo? What are they called? I don't know how to order them. Last edited by sabbates; 01-28-2014 at 07:42 AM. |

Yeah, it's probably the rear suspension link bushings that have split and caused the typical R50 "death wobble." They are the same as you have circled on the diagram. You can get the bushings separately from the links, but they are a real pain to put in. Dorman products makes complete links with a lifetime warranty and you can get them for a reasonable price at Rockauto.com. If the links are original to the vehicle, I would recommend you replace all four....two uppers and two lowers. One note of caution: sometimes the bolts will seize to the steel sleeve inside one or more of the bushings and may need to be torched or cut off. I would recommend you get new through bolts and nuts from Nissan, as well.

Thanks for the help everyone!
I replaced the lower link (lower trailing arm) bushings, and the wobble is gone! I bought a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight for $100, and pressed the new bushings in myself! Thanks again. |

Great job. Bushings are cheap. If you wanted to order all the brackets fully assembled like I did it would cost $475 plus around $250 in labor.
The shop I took it to had to torch most of the bolts off so I'm lucky I bought replacements. Here are part numbers: Suspension brackets ordered (upper and lower bar links with bushings). Two lower trailing arms: 55110-2W110, Two upper trailing arms: 55120-1W200, and several nuts and bolts to go along with them. To fix any potential Wobble/Sway related to bushing problems as noted by NTB98-001 (April 1, 1998). -dan |
