Default 2011 pathfinder dealer says charcoal clogged with dirt

Have the service engine soon light is on and it comes on a day after filling up and goes out sometimes after a day or two. the code is evap system closed and the dealer just told me that the charcoal canister is clogged up with dirt. My question is how in the world is the dirt getting in there and how can I prevent it the vehicle is only 2 years old and we live on a dirt road. I thought this was a closed system to vent the gas tank to the intake manifold. Please enlighten me.

Just checked and the warranty on this is only 36000 miles so it expired 4000 miles ago

the emissions warranty is more extensive than the original 3yr/36mo warranty
might your dealer consider a repair under the emissions warranty?

From what I can tell the warranty expired at 36000 miles this is the worst warranty I have ever seen on a vehicle for emission systems and figures in highly when it comes time to replace this vehicle it probably won't be a nissan

The kicker here is the dealer will probably charge me a fee to tell me this

The dealer did try to charge me a fee until they fessed up that nothing came out of the canister when they tried to clean it and it had plenty of air flow through it so I told them I wasn't paying for a fishing expedition and they could charge me but I would dispute the charge as they didn't do what I was paying for.

I got the charcoal canister out and cleaned by applying low pressure air and lightly tapping on the on the side and I got actual chunks out of it. I pulled the moisture separator and it was packed with dirt so I suspect that was my problem causing the code. I cleaned it out and am going to get 15 feet of 5/8 hose and run it to the engine compartment. Any ideas what to put on the end of the hose to keep the dust out?

The hose is 5/8 I was thinking of an intake filter like used to be on the aircleaner for the old style PCV valves

Yep I got an elbow 15 feet of 5/8 tygon hose and a PCV air cleaner filter tomorrow I will modify a system that nissan should have already fixed long ago. The hose is clear so I will be able to see if dirt is getting past the filter

All done and all lights out. I have a question when is the evap vent valve open and when is the purge valve open?

The vent valve is always open until energized by the ECM and the purge is normally closed until duty cycled by the ecm
