Tips Needed For 98 Pathfinder Timing Belt Replacement
I'm planning to replace the timing belt on my 3.3L 98 Pathfinder.
Does anyone have any tips or advice? I'm a bit worried about removing the crankshaft. I don't have an impact wrench, but I've used the "starter blip" method on my camry. Does that work on the Pathfinders? I'm also a little concerned about getting the timing right, since it's an interference engine. Thanks for any advice. |

The "Engine Mechanical" section of the service manual have the instruction to to replace the belt. You can download the section here: 1998 Nissan Pathfinder Service Manual - Loose Sections - Free with Registration - Nissanhelp.com

If you don't like using the starter to remove the crankshaft pulley, is there a way to stick a screwdriver in the flywheel teeth to hold it still while removing the pulley?
Do you have to remove the starter to do it, or is there an access hole? Thanks. |

I use the impact gun, but when compressed air is not available I use an special tool with a chain to hold the pulley. The starter trick works OK, I have seen many techs doing it at the shop, I just didn't like it.

I'm not a big fan of the starter-kick method. I've seen somebody crack a starter housing using this method on a Nissan truck once.
The nice thing about doing the timing belt on a VG engine is that there are alignment lines on the belt to match up with the marks on the cam/crank sprockets. The arrow on the belt points toward the front of the vehicle. There will be a dashed line that lines up with the right bank (passenger side) cam sprocket mark. The two, solid lines line up with the left bank cam sprocket mark and the crank sprocket mark, respectively. I usually replace the tensioner pulley, front cam and crank seals, water pump, thermostat and drive belts while I'm there. I also take a good look at the radiator hoses. Since the belt has to last another 105,000 miles, you might as well make sure the rest will last that long as well. I've been using "Gates timing belt componant kit w/ water pump" from Rockauto.com on the last few I've done. Good price and good quality parts. |
