98 Pathfinder Timing Belt Procedure
Anyone have a link to a procedure to change the timing belt on a 98 Pathfinder?
I've never done mine, but I've done it on my other cars, so I have some experience. Anything I should be aware of? Thanks |

Instructions are in the "Engine Mechanical" section of the service manual. You can download the section free from here: 1998 Pathfinder Service Manual - Loose Sections - Free with Registration - Nissanhelp.com

Thanks.
I was wondering if anyone had anything to add to the procedure in the FSM. For example, FSM says to "remove crankshaft pulley bolt", but doesn't say how to secure the crank shaft from rotating while trying to remove the bolt. It also says to "remove crankshaft pulley with suitable puller". Does anyone have a comment on what type of puller? Has anyone done it and posted pictures? If not, maybe I'll be the first. |

I always just "gunned" the bolt on using a 1/2" air gun, but not everyone has access to an auto repair shop, like I do. Proper method would be to use a ring gear stopper which would hold the crank in place. Other methods include "the rope trick," where rope is fed into a spark plug hole as much as possible, then the engine is turned by hand until the piston compresses the rope and stops the engine.
There is a "special tool" from Kent-Moore to remove the crank pulley. I use a Craftsman gear puller. Normally, I'll replace the following when replacing the timing belt: the timing belt and tensioner pulley, drive belts, water pump, front cam and cranks seals, thermostat. If in questionable shape, I may also replace the radiator hoses at this time. I've been using a lot of Gates timing componant kits w/ water pump from Rockauto.com. The quality of the parts is excellent and the price is tough to beat! For the seals, drive belts and thermostat, I stick with genuine Nissan parts. |
