info on p0420/p0430 codes
I have a 05 Pathfinder SE and I'm getting the p0420/p0430 codes. I spoke to a friend who is a mechanic about these and he said that I need all four cats replaced. I thought I had read someplace that only the rear cats needed replaced when these codes came up. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Also, if all four need to be replaced can anyone recommend a good site to buy them from.. Feel free to pm or respond directly here.

Verify with your friend again. Your vehicle does not have 4 catalytic converters. But it does have 4 Oxygen sensors.
OBDII Code P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1 | Nissanhelp.com. Bank 1 refers to cylinder 1. So locate where cyl. 1 side exhaust that leads to your Cat. OBDII Code P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2 | Nissanhelp.com. Bank 2 refers to Cyl. 2 opposite side of Cyl. 1. There are numerous threads on here from owners reporting the same codes. Some are fortunate enough that replacing the 02 sensors solved the issue. Some are not as lucky as they have to replace their catalytic converters. Have your cat tested. If your car has 100k miles or more and 02 sensors have not been replaced, now is the time to do so. Hope this helps. |

Benny,
Thank you very much.. My friend isn't a nissan mechanic but I wanted to run it by him anyway. I do have over 100K and I changed the rear O2's and the ses light came back on. I have the front o2 sensors, just need to get them in. Last edited by ctalford; 12-20-2011 at 12:16 AM. |

I would check ecm grounds, remove the frt sensors in the convertors and look inside to see if the cat is deteriorated or missing, also you maybe able to compare sensor readings of the exhaust with diagnostic tool

why buy four when one or two will do?
[QUOTE=ctalford;74165]I have a 05 Pathfinder SE and I'm getting the p0420/p0430 codes. I spoke to a friend who is a mechanic about these and he said that I need all four cats replaced. I thought I had read someplace that only the rear cats needed replaced when these codes came up.
GET MORE ADVICE. I have a 2002, and only the front two cats have sensors. why replace the rear ones at all? Intake air leaks MIGHT be the cause of my bank 1 code problem, and if so, I don't want to replace the expensive converter. |

Had the same problem. It's the front two cats. All four o2 sensors are upstream from the rear cats. I replaced the o2 sensors while we had the cats out. Good luck.

Thanks for the help all. I needed the new cats and o2's. Also needed a vent control valve. Unfortunately, mechanic went to the dealership to get the cats. I had the front o2's and valve.

Ouch at getting them from the dealer. Courtesy lists them at $530/ea with a $140 core charge. I just bought Walker Exhaust Direct Fit replacement cats for $90/ea from Rock Auto. I figure even at that price I can replace them 4 times if they rust out, before I get to the cost of OE replacements. I am waiting on the gaskets, hardware, O2 sensors, and a warm day before I put them on.

Try erasing the codes and then erasing the ECM self-learning memory and see if the codes return before doing anything else. Also make sure there are no exhaust leaks and the engine is not running too rich or too lean. Having a scan tool to observe the long-term fuel trim would be beneficial to diagnosing the problem. Also, make sure your spark plugs are not overdue for replacement; they should have been replaced at 105,000 miles.
