350z engine "clattering"
I have a 2004 350z. When the car is left unused for a day or two it makes a "clattering" or "chatter" when cranked. I took it the dealership and they said that the oil bleeds out from the lifters and when the engine runs the oil will return and the noise is "normal" and is not causing any damage. I'm no mechanic, but unlubricated lifters doesn't sound normal to me. Any one else having this problem?

It is normal after the car sits for a while. The 300z had filter with a valve that would keep oil in the upper end of the engine. I don't know if there is anything available to fit the 350z.

I found one here for $9.95 http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/17-8014
This should solve your problem. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I tried the Nissan oil filter but it didn't seem to help much. I've had the problem diagnosed by a Master Tech and he said the hydraulic lash adjusters needs replacing. What are your thoughts?

it is normal for some noise when sitting. they make noise after we change oil. it does'nt sound good but it is a normal condition. and replacing hydrolic lash adjusters? the only way to adjust lash on these engines is to replace the shims under the valve spring buckets wich sit on top of the valve springs. this means disassembling the engine. i do not think you have an unusual noise. and there are no so called adjusters unless that is what he is calling the selective shims. i would not want them replacing these shims unless it rattles all the time. it is not an easy procedure and can be done incorrectly very easily and cause real engine damage.

Thanks for the insight, that makes me feel better. I do have one more concern though. It only started doing this recently, 24,00 miles. Why did the engine not make this clattering from the beginning and should I be concerned that the problem "developed" over a period of miles and should I expect the clattering to get progressively more pronounced as the car gets older?

may be the filters used recently or the weight of oil used recently. may want to use lighter weight oil to lubricate top end of engine quicker.

Have you tried switching to the k&n oil filter?

After the first 3000 miles I've only used Mobil 1 full synthetic 5W 30 oil. Could that be part of the problem? Also, my most recent oil change, about 2 weeks ago, I used the OEM Nissan oil filter with the check valve. Would you recommend the K&N over the Nissan filter?

The nissan filter does not( to my knowledge) have a check valve. I would try the k&n as it is advertised that it has an anti drain back valve.

I'm going to try the K & N filter and also I've been advised to go to a syn blend 5W 20 oil. Does the brand matter. I've never used motorcraft oil before but they have a new 5W20 on the market. Recommendations?

Brand doesn't really matter much. I have heard amsoil and mobil 1 are supposed to be the best ones out there.

same prob here tookin it in several times for this issue and the first nissan i took it to "didnt hear it"' so i tried another and said the noise was coming from the valves due to carbon build up. So they sell me the BG decarbon crap, i knew thats not the prob but the guy said it's a start. Advisor stated that there was 3 Z's that sounded the same there upon the initial startup. I got the service done today and guess what same prob. my guess is that the lifters are not holding pressure after engine is shut off. Who knows maybe its just a 'normal' engine characteristic but i dont like it. One time i didnt start it for a week and it sounded like a power stroke diesel engine! I wish somebody can figure out this problem.
