you can try to manually retard ignition by changing chain position to see if retarding ignition works with that module. you need a mechanic with free time.

Hey there,

I wanted to give you an update on the ping issue. Recently I have decided that it was time to change the spark plugs on my MO as I was near 100,000 kms. I thought I might as well take the recommendation of some others who struggled with engine ping issues and use a one-step colder plug type, as well get the engine base timing retarded by 2 degrees. My trusty neighborhood mechanic also performed a very throrough carbon cleaning on the intakes. Guess what? The ping is gone. Yay!!!!! I waited a couple of weeks before I posted this, but it really seem to have solved this problem that was plaguing my car for the past couple of years. Some details for thos who want to try this fix:

- Use NGK LFR6AIX-11 Iridium IX Spark Plug. It's one step colder than the standard LFR5AIX. With NGK, the higher the number, the colder the plug. Do not use anything colder than that, because that would lead to spark plug fouling.
- Change the base timing by setting it back 2 degrees. The Nissan Consult tool allows for adjusting the base timing +- 5 degrees. This will not harm the engine. My mechanic had the necessary programming tool to adjust this setting in the ECU. Unfortunately simple OBDII tools will not do this, you'll need to take your Murano to a stealership (that will charge you about $100 for pushing two buttons on the Consult II) or find a neighborhood mechanic with the compatible scanner.
- Last but probably not least, even despite several Seafoam treatments, my mechanic found extensive carbon build up in the intakes. So he did an extensive cleaning. I also dia another Seafoam just before oil change, but this time let the Seafoam stand in the engine overnight. I think these two actions hopefully got rid of all the gunk that was in the engine.

So, fingers crossed, I hope this is the end of my saga.

yes i lived through that experience for a couple of weeks before i found the problem myself through a thread here, the mechanic didn't have a clue...

and he calls himself "THE MOCIALIST",...HEHEHE...

I heard about that, but that ticking noise is very different from the pre-detonation ping I was getting. The ping was only present under very specific circumstances, under light load and only around 1700 rpm. This is a different issue, and not fuel dampener related.

Has anyone else has the same success as PHoward with the coldder spark plugs and the -2 degree timing adjustment.
I have had the same identical pinging issue with my 2004 Murano and will proceed if others can confirm this fixes the pining.

Default Urgent help

Hi

I have the same problem with my engine, I´m from Chile, I have a Nissan Murano 2006 model with VQ35DE engine.

I have read a lot of posts and information about these problem so I have change the 2 fuel dampers (new, original Nissan part) and also change the six spark plugs one step colder (NGK LFR6AIX-11). First I change the spark plugs, no solution to my problem, then I change the 2 fuel dampers and the engine is still knocking.

I really like the Nissan Murano, but i can´t fix the engine knocking.

About 6 months ago, when the engine was already knocking the first thing I do was advanced timing in 2 degrees, now my engine is supposedly set in 17°, from factory is set at 15°.

One mechanic that work in a Nissan Dealership said my that when they advanced my engine timing 2 degrees, this is only done by the Nissan Consult only for testing, and so my engine is not set at 17°, is still in 15°. (I´m not sure about these information)

The next step I´m going to do is go to a Nissan Dealer and connect the consult, to now what timing is set my engine, if it is 17°, the mechanic is wrong.

I wan´t now retard the engine timing, maybe I´m going to put again in 15° or maybe 14°, to know if these fixes my engine knocking.

Do someone have really fixthese problem of engine knocking?

How can I solve these problem?

Waiting for your replys

thanks

PHoward,

Did the pinging ever return? Please update, as I have been dealing with the same issues with my Maxima.

Thanks!

Default read this...

Read this 1st:

100,000 mile update - don't spend $40000 on a new car!!

If you have a laptop or computer and want to permanently adjust your timing and read Nissan specific codes don't get the generic Wally World code reader for a $100, this is better.....

When I tore apart the VQ35DE engine in the wife's Murano it had an oxygen sensor that was blown in half but still functional and no CEL or SES codes were displayed. This could've caused the pinging when the vehicle was up to temp but not when cold......

Oil also accumulates in the upper intake and back of the intake valves because the PCV recirculates the oil vapors back into the combustion chamber to be burned, due to the EPA. Under high vacuum or decelleration your PCV is wide open and sucking all those vapors. Try pulling the upper intake manifold off, I bet there's a thick film of oil. High end BMW M3/M5 have a oil separator with no PCV valve. This separates the oil from the vapor so you get no oil in the upper intake. I made my own....

If your burning oil....too late. No other way around saving it, as when I split the VQ35DE engine apart the oil control rings were gummed up. I saw gummed rings on a Nissan Quest, Toyota Celica, Toyota Corolla, Nissan 350Z, Infiniti G35, Nissan Altima, Nissan Maxima, etc....You could re-ring the engine, re-hone the cylinders and drill more oil return holes in the pistons......or buy a new engine!!

read this:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B0TE...it?pli=1&hl=en

New engine installed....change your oil before 5000 miles!! If you're paranoid change oil before 3500 miles!! Use dynosaur oil for the break in periods then use synthetic oil. Synthetic oil withstands thermal temperatures better, so it reduces gumming......

Merry Christmas!!

Just a thought....

This does not seem to be a true performance chip. A true performance chip remaps all parameters in the ecu. It sounds like the idea is to trick the ecu into thinking the intake temp is colder than it actually is, thereby advancing timing and maybe getting a performance increase that way. At times advancing the timing may trigger the knock sensor and pick up the increase in noise and back off the timing. Just an fyi...the ecu also reads the temp from the coolant too, which also plays a role in timing.
