Question fuel pressure check

On my 2000 maxima 3.0l I want to check the fuel pressure on the engine and was wondering do you have to use the adapter to check the presssure or can you just remove the fuel return line and check it there? If I have to have the adapter is there a place other than the dealer to purchase one?

You might be able to rent one at advance auto if you have one near you.
