Default 2002 nissan maxima valves are rattling.

My 2002 Nissan Maxima has 80,000 miles on it.the valves have been rattling for about 30,000 miles but you could barely hear them.now it's louder.i start the car and drive a few miles after warm up is when it is more noticable.any ideas?can you tell me if it could need timing adjustment or if it is a gas problem such as the octane im using.any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Pat

Default has to be my valves they make a noise in the top part of the engine.

valves making a weird sound rattling is the best way i know to describe it.maybe it's because im notr using high octane gas maybe its in need of timing adjustment.i thought maybe someone who has a nissan maxima might have had this problem.any help would be appreciated.thanks Patricia

its probably knocking or pinging you should probably use 93 octane only the best others tuff is crap. i would use shell or chevron since they have additives that help your engine. what are you currently using?

Default Please see this thread"2003 Maxima Rattle / Rattling 1500 to 2000 RPM"

This is not an octane problem. See my post on the other thread. You're wasting your time if you follow that. Do you have a 6 speed or manual? I wonder if this is happening to the manuals more than the autos. What do you have?

Default Please see thread "2003 Maxima Rattle / Rattling 1500 to 2000 RPM"

This is not an octane problem. Not sure if it is related to your valves though. I have never been able to solve my issue since the mechanics all say the same thing regarding to octane but this is not the issue nor is it injectors. (at least for me) I tried all those remedies related to fuel to no avail. And if it is bad gas, then why isn't everyone driving around with pinging/rattling noises coming from their cars after filling up with Costco gas as I was told this was inferior gas. (However, when the noise first started I was using Chevron with techron)
Do you have a 6 speed or auto? Mine is a 6 speed and I was wondering if it was somehow related to manual transmissions. Is anyone else out there having rattling/pinging issues with their Maximas with auto trans?

Sorry for the repeated post--I was unaware that it was submitted so I redid it.

Sounds like the CVT's are going bad. Try useing a stethoscope to pin point the noise.

Im getting the same noise with a 02 3.5 altima auto trnas. Could it be to much back pressuer form a bad cat allowing the exhaust valves to float a little causing the rattle??????? Tried the gas thing to..... no luck

I wonder if it's not a carbon knock.Possibly try to have the intake systen cleaned to remove any carbon built-up in the combustion chambers/valves.

Default Rattle in my 2002 Nissan Maxima engine

I have a rattle in my Nissan Maxima engine, too. I had this same problem at 60,000 miles and the dealer replaced the "small block" of my engine. Not sure what exactly is included with the "small block" of the engine. It took care of the problem until I go to 115,000 miles when it started happening again. I have read one blog that said that it could be bad overhead cams.

Anybody have any experience with what a bad overhead cam might sound like or what symptoms may be for bad overhead cams?
