Lost Keys
Hello! I am new to this site. I found this site because I am trying to find an answer to my problem.
I lost the keys (all keys) to my 2005 Maxima. My unlocked car is parked in my garage. I plan on calling the dealership tomorrow, but I was told by a friend I may have to tow my car to the dealership. Unfortunately, as I said, the car is in my garage and will somehow have to be towed out of the garage. This could get really expensive! What are my options? And how much is a replacement key going to cost me? I noticed there is a barcode sticker in the case that holds the owner's manual. Can a dealership obtain the information they need to make a new key from this barcode? Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you! Yollie |

Thank you vpnavy - I appreciate you taking the time to answer.
I just spoke with a car dealership, who was adamant that the car does indeed have to be towed to the dealership before a key can be made. He explained it was part of the anti-theft feature of the car. I guess I will wait until a specialist answers my question here to confirm what I've been told. Thank you again. |

I agree with vpnavy and your dealer, you have to take your Maxima to the dealer to have the keys reprogram or, if the dealer wants to help you and you are willing to pay them instead of the tow truck, they can come to you (with key already cut and the Nissan computer) to reprogram the keys in your garage.

Thank you for the suggestion to have the dealership come to my house. Unfortunately, they are claiming they can't do it due to insurance issues. Technicians only have insurance coverage during test drives and while working on a car on the dealership lot. Makes sense I guess.
However, the parts department did have a suggestion that I thought was very useful. I want to pass it along in case someone else finds themselves in this situation. As I said, my car is in my garage. In order for a tow truck to pull it out of the garage, it would cost quite a bit more than a regular towing job. They would have to put it on a dolly, winch it up, etc. etc. The dealership said he can make a key for $10, which would allow me to put the car in gear so the car can be pushed out of the garage. The key won't start the engine, but at least I would be able to push the car out so a tow truck can easily tow it. Great piece of advice and that probably saves me $100 extra the tow truck was charging. Thank you again for your help. I'm glad I found this site, it's nice to know there's a place to ask questions when I need it. |

That is such BULL!! First of all, I am not calling you a liar. The vin number is all they need. You need to show them proof that you own the car. Someone show me PROOF that they cannot make a key without your car present. If they can make you a key that won't start the engine, but at least you would be able put it in gear....ummm that is your normal piece of crap Nissan Stealerships at their best. I have done it one time. I threw a damn fit about it and basically belittled them until they made my key. Goes to show why their customer service does not rank near the top. Give them hell!!!

Not in my case. I have a number on a small metal strip that I used. Good luck anyway getting some new keys.

I just wanted to provide an update on this. I wrote a letter to Nissan Consumer Affairs, and asked this same question. Here is their answer:
"Regarding your question, if a key is lost, the duplicate key that you received with your vehicle will start the vehicle as I suppose you already know. If you don?t have that key either- as we understand, please visit any Nissan dealer as only dealers have the technology necessary to replace a lost key. You don?t have to tow your vehicle. You will need a proof of ownership and the driving license at the dealership."As you can see I got conflicting information from what was told to me here and by the dealer. However, I called Consumer Affairs and after much discussion and being put on hold, it was confirmed that yes, I do have to tow my car to the dealer. It's amazing how even Nissan is confused by this issue. Seems like a simple question, one that has caused me lots of stress this past couple of days. I feel like such a fool for not having my extra backup key put in a safe place and easily accessible. If you learn nothing else from this thread, learn this: Always always have a backup key! Thanks again! |

Just an FYI to save my friends some pain, if the need should arise to get any spare transponder auto keys or replacement keyless entry / alarm fobs for these newer cars. First, if you go to the dealer, prepare to be raped. You can easily find blank keys for ~$10 - $15 online. You still need to get them cut; however it's the programming of the transponder in the key is where they get you. If you have 2 working keys, you can do this yourself by following a process in your drivers seat once you get a blank and have it cut (most any hardware store can do this for a couple bucks). See the linked video. In my case, I only ever had the one key, so I called a nearby ACE hardware and was quoted $62 for the key, cut and programmed. Thank you nerd boy! Second, as far as the alarm fobs, the dealers will screw you to the wall; sometimes hundreds of dollars. I found a backup for mine on eBay for $20, including shipping. NEW KEYLESS REMOTE FOB 02-06 NISSAN ALTIMA MAXIMA 350Z INFINITI G35 KBRASTU15 | eBay This all started with me looking for a replacement for my Audiovox remote starter; From Audiovox $65 +S&H. eBay, $11 total. KEYLESS REMOTE START FOB AUDIOVOX FCC ID: ELVATCC AVX-1B4S | eBay Gotta love the interwebs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS-r7...&feature=share |

- dealer, this will be the most expensive option and you might have to wait a little bit longer - locksmith, cheaper and faster than the dealer, you might get quoted $80 to $100 for a new key cut and programming.. -ebay.. surely the cheapest option you have but you will still need spend time on cutting the key and programming it through dealer or locksmith... carkeyadvice.com you can check here for more information on how to replace you car key.. |

Yup dealer cost about $100. You can buy the Key online about $10. and have an authorized locksmith cut the key and program it. Or tow your car to dealer and cut your cost to about $40 - $60. Without duplicate key, locksmith would need your vehicle VIN #. I bought a new Key FOB from Amazon as spare for $4.99.
