Default Car cranks but won't turn over

I'm sure this symptom can apply to many problems. 2000 Nissan Maxima cranks and cranks but won't turn over. Can anti theft system cause this? If so, what can I do? I'm going to listen for fuel pump priming noise to see if it's the fuel pump. I've read that sometimes sensors can cause starting problems. Is this problem common in this vehicle ?

If it's an anti-theft issue, the security light should remain "on" when you turn the key to the "on" position. Cam position sensors and crank position sensor failure is fairly common on VQ engines. I would check for stored trouble codes in the ECM. If it's a fuel delivery issue, you should be able to spray some carb cleaner into the intake and then it should "fire" when you try to start it, assuming the spark plugs aren't fouled.
