starter problems
I have a 2004 Maxima 5 speed auto. It wouldn't crank. When I turned the switch on there was a click sound. Peck on the starter and it started. So for has continued to start. I am guessing I need a new starter. Would I go from the top side or underneath the car to remove it? Is this fairly easy or do I nerd to take it to a mechanic which I can't afford? Please help.

You will access it from underneath. I don't know what "peck" means, you sound like from Australia which is near and dear to my heart. If you haven't, search on youtube for the procedures.

If you have basic mechanical skills and tools, it's an easy job. Just make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable before working on the starter. The 5-speed A/T has it accessible from the bottom of the vehicle, unlike the 4-speed A/T, which is mounted on the top side. You can download the "Starting and Charging System" chapter of the factory service manual from this site's knowledge base:
