Default 1990 auto trans question

1990 RE4F02A trans.
Problem is a delay going into forward from park.
Going into Reverse no delay.
Trans shifts fine. All gears work.
Any ideas/suggestions???

Well, being that it is 25 years old, it could be that the seal in the forward clutch might be getting a little hard, or possibly some sticking in the valve body (use of Dexron III/Mercon ATF could do this, rather than Nissan Type "D" or an ATF recommended for Dexron/Dexron II). Probably not the case, but you should check the shifter bushings first, especially the one above the heat shield, closest to the shifter, as they were known to melt. If that's okay, I would try draining and refilling the ATF using either Nissan-matic Type "D" or a Dexron II recommended ATF, like Valvoline Maxlife ATF or Castrol Multi-import ATF. You might also consider a conditioner, like Trans-X. If that doesn't correct the problem, you would be best to seek advice from a reputable trans shop, but don't be surprised if they recommend an overhaul or replacement.

Thanks
I just changed the fluid.
I thought Dex/Mer was the same as DexII.
Would just draining from the plug, and replacing with the correct fluid be enough. Or should I flush the whole thing again?????

Just noticed your the same person the replied on the other forum.
I posted the question in the Stanza forum.
I have an Axxess. Almost the same as the Stanza.
No Axxess forum.
The trans model number is the same for the Maxima and Axxess. But I know they are different outside.
I'm thinking the insides might be the same. Probably less plates for the Axxess.

The original formula was Dexron, which is the same as Nissan-matic Type "D" ATF, followed by Dexron II, which is very similar. When Dexron III/Mercon replaced Dexron II, it had a thicker viscosity than the earlier versions and in some cases it caused sticking within the valve bodies of some of the Asian transmissions that were designed for Dexron/Dexron II. Nissan released a TSB concerning the issue years ago. While it's okay to top off the ATF with Dexron III/Mercon, it is not recommended as a service replacement. Draining and refilling should be fine; it will replace about 1/2 of the fluid that's inside the trans. Obviously flushing would replace a lot more.

Thanks
I think I'll flush it and see if it works.
Cheaper than a trans overhaul.
