Default How to Test the Fuel Pump on 2001

I have a 2001 Maxima with 102,000 miles. It has started to take several cranks to start. The battery is fine. Just replaced the starter (it had failed). I'm wondering if the fuel pump is starting to go bad. I had this issue on my 2005 Sentra. The dealer said if it starts hard, the pump was probably failing. They replaced it and the problem went away.

Is there any way to test the fuel pump on my 2001 Maxima? The FSM shows how to diagnose a dead pump (EC chapter). The part is quite expensive and don't want to replace if it's not bad. It is the original fuel pump.

Thanks in advance.

You'll need to get a fuel pressure test gauge and it'll "T" between the fuel hose and the top nipple of the fuel filter. If you have an auto parts store with a loaner program, they may have one you can use. Turn on the key and the system will pressurize. Note the pressure, which will likely be around 40+ psi. Start the engine and note the pressure, which should be around 34-36 psi. If you disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose, the pressure should jump back up. If the pressure is below specs, you could have a weak pump or restrictive fuel filter. If the pressure is to high while running, suspect a faulty fuel pressure regulator or no vacuum to it. If there is no fuel pressure at all when the key is turn on, then check of the power and ground circuits will need to be performed.
