Default Brake light

The brake light in in my 2004 maxima remains on. Any ideas as to why and what I need to do to get it to turn off?

When you step on your brake pedal, it engage the switch at the bottom activating your brake lights. Its possible the switch is stuck and don't release when you release the brake pedal. Manually check and operate and may be spray an electronic cleaner.

I don't think I was clear in my question. It is not my exterior brakes that remain on but rather on the dash it states brakes and does not turn off even though the emergency brake is not on. Thanks for any help.
