I can only assume you were taking it apart to fix something and that it didn't fall apart on it's own?
If so, hopefully you are lucky. You can get a tool at the parts store that has a magnet on the end of it that you can use to fish around in the area and hopefully fish it out. Some people have reported they got it really quickly, others have said it takes a while and lots of patience. Good luck to you!

i tried a few magnetic tools (store bought & homemade) with no luck... so my next question would be : will the timing cover come off after motor mount, crankshaft pulley and oil pan removed? thanks for all replies

i made a "custom" magnetic tool and fished the plunger and spring out. The maxima is up and running like a champ! (260k) Thanks for all the help

Great to hear! I did my water pump a couple of months ago and was terrified of losing anything in that cavern. My car has been known to eat tools and other bolts when dropped into the engine compartment by accident and I wasn't going to take a chance with something falling into that timing chain cover!
95 Max just hit 280k! |

I know this is from a while back but can you tell me how you made your custom magnetic tool? I’m in the same situation on my Altima and don’t want to have to pull the whole cover off
