2001 Maxima SE with High Idle Speed Problem
My previous situation
When I start the engine, (or when the engine is 'cold'), after a minute or two, it registers a norman idle speed (hovering over 700 to 800rpm) but after about 30 minutes of driving (when engine is 'hot'), say, while I am waiting for traffic light, I notice high idle speed (1000 to 1200rpm) in "Drive" and I have to press the brake harder than normal to hold the car. When I put in "Park", the rpm jumps to anywhere from 1800 to 2300 and stays there. It's been like this for about a month now and so far no SEL codes, although these sound like symptoms of P0505. What I've done and none of below solved my problem. Cleaned MAF sensorI still have 'High Idle Speed' problem. This time, although improved a little, the idle hovering over 1800rpm appears after a while, say after driving more than 50miles. Or sometimes, idle bounces back and forth between 700 and 1800 when I put in "Park" after a long drive.Any idea what the cause might be and what I can try next? |

Did you notice any difference after performing the Idle Air Volume Learning procedure?
My only suggestion is to try performing the Idle Air Volume Learning again. It's not easy to get it right the first time, sometimes I have to do it several times to get it right. Procedure page EC-67 "EC" section of the service manual.

I tried twice. I didn't feel any difference at first trial. I thought I didn't follow the procedure correctly. So, I tried again but no difference that I could tell. I will try again several times over the weekend and I will report back to you.
I don't know if it has anything to do with the idle problem but I did not mention in previous post that I had to adjust TPS because after I replaced the TB assembly, transmission didn't shift right, especially between 1st and 2nd gear, either up-shift or down-shift. After the adjustment, it was smooth as before. At any rate, thanks for quick reply and I will report back soon. |

If that doesn't work, it is possible that the throttle position sensor is in close position. Follow the procedure in page EC-116 for the THROTTLE POSITION SWITCH CLOSED POSITION

No, I did not find a solution, yet.
Over the extended holiday weekend, I tried the "re-learning" process about 4 times and the result is still the same. Matter a fact, the high rpm condition got worse, although I think it got worse because of the weather we have in our region. We have 3-digit temp(today 101F radio broadcast, 106F "ABT" on my Maxima) for a couple of days now and the high-idle problem starts within 5 mins. of driving, instead of say 40 to 50 mins./miles driving. Further, shifting between 1st and 2nd, especially up-shifting and driving slow, say around 20mph, got worse. Between the shift, rpm jumps to around 2000 momentarily and 'bucs' as the gear changes. Also, idle bouncing back and forth (now between 1200 and 1800) is more pronounced than before in "Park". This happens when I turn off the A/C and when I turn A/C back on, rpm stays high but, steady. I don't know if it is related but nowadays, I smell radiator fluid as I watch engine running although I don't see any sign of leakage from anywhere. Any feedback/solution regarding this matter would be appreciated. |

remove ecm from middle of console, remove 4 screws and remove cover. if you see burnt traces or burnt chips send it auto truck electronics in tn. old isc in conjunction with motor mounts burned up ecm. disconnect elec connection on mounts replace isc and get ecm repaired. ATE was cheapest and quickest for rebuilding. $220 for ecm 243 for isc motor mounts free. stealership $2245

Do this:
Remove and inspect PCV valve. Replace if over 30k miles. Its inexpensive. Then do Accelerator Pedal Position Learning, then Throttle Position Learning since you replaced the TB, then Idle Air Volume Learning procedures. You must get the MIL to blink usually between the 10 and 12 second count. If you've reach 20 count and MIL hasn't blink, redo this procedure again, and again, and again. Accurate count is KEY. |

Though you don't mention it but I'm almost certain the Check Engine Soon light is lit. If so, have your mechanic scan computer for trouble code(s).

Thanks for the reply, no there is no service engine soon lighting up. Its only acting up when the engine is hot.

Hmm interesting. You either have an intake air leak or vacuum leak that manifest when engine is hot. Or you have a failing Idle Air Control Valve (IACV/AAC Valve).
