Default 2004–2007 nissan maxima; abs activates with normal braking

NTB07-016b - I've had this problem for well over 6 months now and when it initially started, I disconnected the front right plug, located under the a/c line, that sends power to the ABS actuator. I was told this was a short-term fix but just haven't gotten around to giving it attention as I drive my bmw z4 for the summer.

as the winter nears, im wondering how to avoid being scammed into having my abs actuator changed? I've heard horror stories about people who have gone to the dealership expecting to pay $300-400 for the ABS job:

"Remove only the right rear brake rotor, wheel hub assembly, baffle plate and ABS wheel sensor."

from what I've read online, 6/10 people were told to have their actuator replaced even though the problem had been resolved by following the TSB. This requires spending an extra $1500 on parts and labor.

How do I know my ABS actuator is still functioning? I'm skeptical about getting the job done from a private garage as they wouldn't have full knowledge unless i presented them with the "NTB07-16b".

Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you

2004 Nissan Maxima SE

I suggest printing the bulletin and try to find a mechanic that is willing to work with you. You can have him do exactly what the bulletin says. People do that all the time at my shop. You may also ask the mechanic if you can watch while he is doing it, just to make sure he is doing it correct.

Hmm, I wish it were that easy here in Toronto to find a reliable Mechanic. I guess going to a brake specialist is my best bet? Someone who deals with ABS issues etc.

How much labor does the job require? 1-2 hours? 2-3hrs?
A rough estimate would give me a ball park figure of what to expect for pricing here.
Thanks again

I was lucky to get this fixed before my actuator blew. Cost me less than $250 at the dealer.

Unfortunately, if you have a blown actuator, it will cost a pretty penny no matter where you go. That part is flippin' expensive!

yeah thats true.
LMAO YOUR AVATAR IS JOKES.

i already paid $150 to have my car scanned when the problem started and the lights came on, by the dealership -_-
i was quoted $350 for the job + 13% tax here in Ontario.
if i go to a private mechanic and pay him cash, maybe less.

In any case if you want your car repaired before the module blows you are going to pay.As NissanTech said, go to your local garage, present them with the tsb and procedure. The only difficulty about the job is if the sensor bolt is seized. In Canada almost gauranteed.

The ABS on my 2004 SE was engaging almost every time I braked. I took it to Midas (friend of mine owns the shop). Charge was $400 - $450 to do the right rear wheel. It fixed 80% of the problem. I spoke with a Nissan service manager who told me the next step is to do the left rear wheel. If that does not fix it, then replace the actuator.

Thank god I sold my maxima. But every good car has it's issues since manfuacturing dates. Even my e500 Benz has flaws. These car companies make millions off repairs they should be covering through recalls. My Nissan was a nutorious problematic car. Sensors going bad left right and center. Always fed it synthetic and used premium but the electricals on that car were garbage by today's standards. My advice to you is to see my other post on how to get around the issue in the short term Incase it reoccurs on the other wheel. I hope not!

Default ABS issue still not resolved yet

Hi Guys,

I need your help with this ABS issue. I had cleaned both sensors in the rear, made the hole in the plastic cap bigger so the sensor doesn't touch the cup (that's only in rear right wheel, I am afraid that water will get in now but I did what one of the nissan tech's recommended), I replaced rear right abs sensor with the new one from the dealer $250 deal !!!, I don't get the ABS, Brake lights on, my mechanic says the he doesn't see any error codes when he connects the scanner. The car drives better now but once every blue moon especially when I get off the expressway and reduce the speed from 60 to let's say 40 and start breaking I can hear the clicking in the controller and when I make full stop the ABS starts grinding. Please help.

forget fixing it bro. u tried and failed. that sounds like the abs actuator might be giving out? but i cant be sure. best thing to do is just unplug abs switch for time being so u dont risk blowing ur actuator. it'll run u a good $2000 for the replacement of that bad boy. anyways just forget about driving with ABS for a while unless u want to go and replace all the faulty abs sensors... good luck!!
