Default instrument Cluster

Hi my speedometer quit working so i took the cluster out and on the back the copper trace is burned. So i tried to solder it back together and it worked for a couple minutes then started smoking.
I guess my queston is if i get another cluster is it likely to also burn at that spot or could this just be defective OR what could cause this...
I just dont want to ruin a good cluster immediatly upon install...
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions Bill

Sorry i cannot look at the service manual as my data base only goes back to 94. I would start by taking a close look at the harness for a cut that is contacting metal. then take voltage readings at the connector. Without a wiring diagram i can't say for sure just what the voltage input is. Maybe another tech will respond that has a manual for that year.

Thanks I will start there. Ill probably have to buy a 1992 manual or do alldata.
As far as that connector goes does it go from inside through firewall out then back inside to a computer.

Not sure how they routed it.I want to say it is routed down the right side and under the front door sill plate and then out to the trans, but really not sure on that year.

I just remembered over the summer (yeah its been months since i had a speedometer) i was driving highway speed and the car lost a lot of power when i pulled over the car would not start the fuse marked ENG CONT.was blown.I replaced it but no speedometer since.
And I ve replaced sensor.
I dont see any burnt or nicked wires. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction knowing this. Im sick of looking at wires and its cold outside:
